About Panthaerstein

A serious loudspeaker should be worth living with.

Panthaerstein is an independent loudspeaker company in Paducah, Kentucky, creating limited-production loudspeakers for people who care about music, materials, and the objects they bring into their homes. We develop sound and form together, pursuing a convincing musical experience in an object whose proportions, construction, and details deserve their place in the room.

An architectural eye informs the work, but appearance is only part of the brief. Cabinet geometry, driver selection, materials, and construction influence one another. We consider those relationships from the beginning so the finished loudspeaker makes sense as a whole.

Different disciplines. One standard.

I founded Panthaerstein after a career spent learning how ideas survive contact with materials, manufacturing, budgets, buildings, clients, and the physical world. My formal training was in fine art, with a specialization in glassblowing. Hot glass is an unforgiving teacher: heat, timing, pressure, gravity, rotation, and every contact with a tool can remain visible in the finished object.

The romantic version says the glassblower listens to the material and discovers what it wants to become. Mastery is more demanding than that. Understand the material well enough, and it listens to you. That lesson has stayed with me: expression becomes more deliberate as your understanding deepens.

Nearly two decades in architectural design, development, and construction taught me to resolve competing demands. Structure, scale, materials, cost, production, site, and the client’s needs all have a legitimate say in the result. Product development added the discipline of repeatability: an extraordinary prototype proves something is possible; producing the intended result again shows that it was understood.

Those disciplines converge at Panthaerstein. Each loudspeaker must be acoustically convincing, carefully constructed, repeatable in production, and worth living with. I have no interest in accidental excellence.

Built in Kentucky

We design, develop, build, finish, voice, and test our loudspeakers in Paducah, Kentucky, a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. Limited production keeps design and making close: lessons from the workshop return directly to development. We source components and materials domestically and internationally according to each design’s needs, while responsibility for the completed loudspeaker stays here. Every pair leaves the workshop under my judgment and final approval.

The thinking behind the sound

We build around a continuous musical center, supported by spacious ambience and a convincing bass foundation. Our CAT Alignment architecture develops those elements together, with measurements and listening guiding the balance. The goal is a presentation that draws you into the first track and rewards the rest of the album.

The people behind the work

Terry Pagel

Terry Pagel — Founder and Designer

I lead the design and development of every Panthaerstein loudspeaker, from the initial concept through final approval. I am also particular about sound. Put less politely: bad design, bad craftsmanship, and bad sound make me grumpy.

Noah Abramson — Electrical Engineering

Noah holds a degree in electrical engineering from Cornell and contributes to circuit development, technical review, measurement analysis, and validation. He challenges assumptions and helps ensure our acoustic intentions translate into sound electrical design and repeatable results.

Close to the product. Accountable to the owner.

Buying from an independent company means knowing who designed the product, who approved it, and who remains responsible for it. We describe our loudspeakers honestly, provide clear ownership information, and answer questions plainly when clarification is needed. The care applied to the product should carry through to the ownership experience.

Panthaerstein Momentae Blade stereo speakers designed for warm modern home interiors

Weight, ease, and sculptural presence.

Discover The Momentae

Momentae builds the Panthaerstein approach around a larger-format wideband driver and dual-opposed passive-radiator bass alignment.
Its presentation is focused and spacious, with greater tonal body, deeper bass foundation, and the ease to let larger music develop without becoming hard or congested. Voices remain stable and human in scale. Bass carries authority without loosening its grip on pitch.

The shallow, inclined form gives Momentae real architectural presence without the visual bulk of a conventional tower.

Greatest strength: Full-bodied acoustic scale anchored by a coherent musical center.

Consideration: Momentae makes a stronger visual statement and asks for more physical presence in the room.

Immediacy, rhythm, and remarkable completeness.

Discover The Sveltae

Sveltae carries the same philosophy into a tall, exceptionally slender floorstanding form.

Its presentation is direct, agile, and rhythmically alive. Voices emerge with unusual clarity and stability. Bass is quick, tuneful, and substantial enough to give the music proper foundation without slowing the speaker’s sense of movement.

Sveltae gives up some of Momentae’s ultimate bass reach, physical weight, and large-scale authority. What it preserves is what matters most: a coherent, convincing performance with very little visual mass.

Greatest strength: A complete and immediate musical presentation from an exceptionally narrow loudspeaker.

Consideration: Less deep-bass extension and ultimate acoustic scale than Momentae.
