Haelix Speaker Cable

Belden 9497 is in our DNA. Inside every Panthaerstein loudspeaker, it carries the music from crossover to drivers. Haelix brings that same trusted wire beyond the cabinet—with a double helix that makes the family resemblance more than a metaphor.

We start with two full runs of Belden 9497 per channel, reverse-twisted into a double helix, and finish with hand-soldered Cardas connections. Doubling the conductors increases their effective gauge to approximately 13 AWG, reducing resistance. A handsome tweed jacket completes the cable, with a short section of the twist left visible. Belden at its heart. Cardas at its ends. Panthaerstein’s hand in every detail—a connection worthy of the system you’ve put together.

The Heritage: Why Audiophiles Treasure Belden 9497

Belden 9497 has earned a devoted following among vintage-audio, horn-speaker, and tube-amplifier enthusiasts, particularly in Japan, where its distinctive orange-and-black twist is often called umihebi—“sea snake.” Its appeal has endured through generations of equipment and considerably more expensive cable fashions.

The construction is straightforward: two 16-gauge stranded, tinned-copper conductors in a twisted pair. The affection it inspires is more personal. Enthusiasts prize 9497 for its body, musical flow, and ability to make voices and instruments feel connected to the performance.

We chose it for the wiring inside our loudspeakers. Haelix carries that choice through to the amplifier, with greater conductor area, carefully assembled geometry, and premium terminations.

Before audiophiles claimed it, Belden 9497 earned its reputation as a rugged, high-conductivity professional broadcast wire featuring two 16-gauge conductors of tinned copper in a twisted-pair geometry. Decades ago, it caught the attention of Japan’s vintage audio community—where enthusiasts affectionately named it umihebi (“the sea snake”)—and became a staple alongside high-efficiency horn systems and tube amplification worldwide.

Those Japanese purists discovered that modern, high-capacitance “space-age” copper cables often sounded overly bright, etched, or fatiguing. The tinned-copper strand composition of 9497 acted as a natural acoustic filter, smoothing any harsh high-frequency glare while preserving lightning-fast transient snap. Listeners consistently describe its performance as unforced, natural, and remarkably cohesive, often keeping it in place over far costlier exotic alternatives.

We selected 9497 for our own loudspeakers because it respects the signal path. Haelix is the ultimate expression of that philosophy: a transparent, honest conduit that lets the music breathe.

The Belden 9497 Signature

Ask longtime 9497 listeners what keeps it in their systems, and familiar descriptions emerge: natural vocal presence, generous instrumental body, an easy treble, and a cohesive presentation. Its reputation is especially strong among listeners who want texture and involvement without an etched or clinical balance.

That character makes it an appealing companion to revealing full-range drivers, high-efficiency loudspeakers, and tube amplification. Haelix builds on that appeal with a more substantial construction suited to a finished high-end system.

Advanced Double Helix Geometry & Performance

Haelix doubles down on performance through a carefully calculated mechanical layout:

  • Approximately 13 AWG effective gauge. Matching polarities are connected in parallel, doubling the conductor cross-section. The resulting lower series resistance reduces cable losses and helps the amplifier maintain control of the loudspeaker.
  • Low-Inductance Double Helix: We preserve the factory twist of each original pair and reverse-twist them against each other. This counter-rotation locks the conductors into a tight, consistent double helix that maintains minimal, uniform spacing to keep cable inductance low. Controlling loop area helps limit inductance, reducing the potential for high-frequency attenuation and phase shift.
  • Hand-soldered Cardas connections. Premium connectors provide the final interface with your equipment. Each termination is carefully hand-soldered, with aluminum barrels and adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing protecting the transition from jacket to leads.

A Serious Speaker Cable Well Suited for Its Role

Haelix wears Norfolk Tweed—a protective woven sleeve whose salt-and-pepper appearance recalls a well-cut country jacket. Its texture and understated coloring sit comfortably alongside hardwood, leather, and the other things you’ve chosen to live with.

The jacket meets clean aluminum barrels, while a short exposed section reveals the double helix beneath. The finish has character without forcing you to decorate the room around your speaker cables.

Exposed Twist

Approximately two inches of the double helix remain visible before the leads separate—a small window onto the construction beneath the jacket.

Flexible Ends

At the amplifier end, the two original pairs branch out separately, providing useful reach and flexibility around crowded equipment terminals.

Channel Identification

Discreet white bands identify one cable at both ends, making it easy to follow the same stereo channel from amplifier to speaker. These bands identify the cable, not its polarity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which terminations should I choose?

Our preference is spades at both ends: a timeless connection that clamps securely beneath the binding posts. We especially recommend them at Panthaerstein loudspeakers, where they let the cable drop neatly downward. Our Cardas GRS U spades are silver/rhodium-plated copper; the CABE bananas are nickel-plated brass and project farther behind the speaker.

At the amplifier, available space may guide your choice. The substantial Cardas spades need enough clearance to sit securely without touching neighboring terminals or connectors. They work beautifully where there’s room; closely spaced terminals simply call for more care during installation.

For a crowded amplifier panel, bananas at the amplifier and spades at the speakers can make a tidier, easier connection. The Cardas CABE bananas provide an excellent fit and are a practical alternative when access is tight.

What length do I need?

Measure the actual route from amplifier to loudspeaker, including bends and changes in height, then allow a little slack for comfortable placement and connection. Standard stereo pairs have equal-length cables; choose a length that comfortably reaches the more distant speaker.

Will Haelix work with other passive loudspeakers?

Yes. Haelix was developed to complement Panthaerstein loudspeakers, but it can be used with other conventional passive loudspeakers. Choose terminations compatible with your amplifier and speaker terminals.

Do these cables require break-in?

While the copper conductor itself is stable from day one, dielectric polarization and mechanical settling can take anywhere from 100 to 200 hours of regular playback to fully stabilize, as outlined by cable designer George Cardas. Haelix sounds correct from the very first note, evolving gracefully as it settles into your system.

Engineered to Be Kept

Belden 9497 has spent decades earning its place in systems assembled by people who listen closely. Haelix carries that enduring appeal into a cable with substantial conductors, premium Cardas connections, and a finish worthy of the room around it.
